So here's a new experience for me....TRIATHLON...!

I was a little tenative going into this Triathlon. I contomplated attempting the Olympic Distance but decide to just go for the Sprint Distance mainly because I needed to be finished in time to make it to church (our new Pastor was preaching for the first time on Sunday). I'ts probably a good thing I just did the sprint since my swimming was so weak.

The Triathlon people didn't seem as friendly as people at the races I've been to. I attempeted to strike up a few conversations but most were too busy to take much interest. I had a good time but would much rather done it with someone and not alone.

The swim was in a ski lake just a couple of miles from my home town (Martindale, Tx). I was a little worried about the swim since I haven't done any swim training. I did get in the pool and swim for about 5 minutes on friday (end to end) but my pool is only about 20 feet long. I would consider myself a fairly confident swimmer but I've never swam for any distance. I lined up about 2/3 back in the group for the swim start. As you can see from my swim time, I was very slow. Many of the swimmer were twice as fast as me. I really took my time, I swam on my back, dog paddled and just rested some. When I came out of the swim I couldn't understand why everyone was walking to the transition. I took off running, passing 10-12 people. I guess I really didn't exert myself on the swim very much :-) ... BUT I DIDN'T DROWN...! There were sticker burs in the grass around the transition so we were allowed to put shoes on when we got to the grass area. I decided to place my bike shoes there instead of flip-flops (like most people). This turned out to work well as I could run pretty fast with the bike shoes in the grass. I got my bike and and out of transition pretty fast and took off. I immediatly started passing people and wondering why they were going so slow. The bike route was a familiar one to me as I ride it quite often. It goes right by my place in Martindale (where I keep my horses). The roads are fairly rough, I think it's called chip rock, and it's commonly used here on Texas roads but there aren't many potholes and such. I continued to pass bikers throughout the ride, picking them off one at a time as if they were standing still. I would yell left and scare some of them as I went past :-) At the end of the bike ride I eased off a little to allow my legs to recover a little before the run. My transition from bike to run was not as fast as the previous but I wasn't really prepared and didn't have the quick tie shoe laces like most people there. I was supprised as I starated to run that my legs were moving that quickly. I wasn't expecting to be able to run a sub-7:00 pace and actually didn't feel like I was putting out that much effort. I passed many people running and was only passed by one young guy. At the end of the run I put out a little kick for the last quarter mile but didn't try to kill myself. Immediatly after I finished I headed out to church so I was unaware of my placing until late last evening. I guess they will mail me my award. I will probably do another Triathlon in the future but I would really like to do a longer distance and have someone to do it with. Now...back to running!

Martindale Tx  -  Triathlon For Old Glory

72-80Âş - Humid, Rained during the Run.

Target:
First Triathlon. Don't drown. 18 mph Bike. 7:?? Pace Run.

Note:
I was very tenative on the swim. I lost about 4 minutes there. Biking, I passed about 75 people, running I passed about 20 people. One guy passed me on the bike, I passed him on the run. Only one (25 yr old) guy passed me on the run.

Matthew 8:23-27

23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”

26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

Nice job! Sounds like fun. You were awful close to that 20 mph on the bike and you haven't even been riding much lately. I would like to do a tri one of these days [eventually an Ironman] but I would need to work on my swim. I picture my swim going exactly how you described yours.

Nice job Preston. Too bad we live so far apart.... Sounds like a blast! We both like the cycling thing.... Be a blast

Nice work man! I've never done a tri, but I did a lot of bike events while I was training for STP in 2006 (200 miles from Seattle, WA to Portland, OR) and I had the same reaction from most of the cyclists I talked to. They are a different breed for sure. I think runners are much more fun to hang around with :)

Nice job IJR! 16 minutes for 500m? You were doggin' it on the swim weren't you? Still, I would've been slower than that, if I could even go that far! It's fun to get out nice and slow in a race so you can pass all the slow people mid-race. That was your race plan, right? Nice job handling the bike and run so well!

From SlowJoe on Mon, Jul 02, 2012 at 19:20:07 from 69.131.141.92

Nice job - if you could find a run/bike event you might win the thing! Sounds like a fun time.

From I Just Run on Tue, Jul 03, 2012 at 08:48:31 from 67.79.11.242

Thanks Dave,

I think I could hit the 20 if I did it again. I wasn't sure how hard to push. Apparently I really didn't exert myself on the swim because I don't have any arm muscles that are tired or sore:-)

Rye,

Move to Texas!

Trap,

Yeah I like you guys a lot more :-)

DL,

When I actually swam, I passed up a lot of people, but then I'd rest and dog paddle and watch those pass me. I think next time I can cut 3-4 minutes off the swim without any problem. I had NO race plan what-so-ever!!

Joe,

They had an option for bike/run only but there weren't but a couple entered in it. 167 entered overall and I believe about 12 in my age group.

This is really interesting, and you had a superb result, especially just "getting your feet wet" on the first one. I prefer runners too; only 1 biker in my neighborhood will even say hi.

From Burt on Tue, Jul 03, 2012 at 11:16:17 from 72.223.80.161

That's a very respectable time. I'm surprised you didn't place higher than 33rd. Must be some good competition in TX.

From I Just Run on Tue, Jul 03, 2012 at 12:50:20 from 67.79.11.242

Thanks Flat & Burt,

My swim time killed me. I was 141 out of 167. I think the other 26 swimmers drowned!

From DLTheo on Tue, Jul 03, 2012 at 20:50:56 from 76.28.161.119

In my limited knowledge of swimming I've always understood that swim times are about 4x running times for the same distance. That's based on a good swimmer compared to a runner of equivalent ability, of course. I'm sure you could cover 2000m of running in a lot less than 16:00. I'm sure you will be able to knock four minutes of without too much trouble.

From Jody on Wed, Jul 04, 2012 at 10:40:49 from 99.127.13.81

Congratulations on not drowning! You did a great job. Interesting commentary on the triathlon community. For a long time, I felt that way about cyclist in general, but most I encounter here in FW are very friendly.

Wow - I don't log in for a couple of days and I miss some exciting stuff. This is great - job well done!

Great race report! One of these days I'll do a tri. I like hearing the viewpoint of a noobie.
