This was a nice Training Run for me. As you know I planned to run the Full Marathon but backed out that and dropped down to the Half. As usual the weatherman was wrong...the temperature was even hotter than he had predicted.

At the first of the race I decided to go ahead and run a fair Half Marathon pace for the first few miles and see how I felt. After first two miles I knew I wouldn't be able to hold that pace. As you can see by my HR the effort was there but nothing more could be done without blowing up or destroying my body in an effort to run a few minutes faster.

Since I didn't burn myself out on this race my plan is to try and run the BCS (Bryan College Station) Marathon on December 8th. I'm going to continue to train until then and if the weater is good I'll enter at the last minute.

The Rock-n-Roll Marathon/and Half was a huge event with 26,000 runners altogether. I was a little unimpressed with the production. I though it would be a little more hyped up.

I ended up 160th out of 14,427 runners and 10th in my age group out of 524 runners. Apparently everyone was having difficulty in the heat. :-)

The best thing about the race was that I got to spend the day with my daughter (Callie). She ran her second Half Marathon and PR'd by over 2 minutes. That was a fun thing to see and be a part of.

Way to go IJR, I think you made a very wise decision here. I bet you're really glad you didn't take too much of a taper, either. Count this past week as just a general recovery week and now you're back to training for a week or two before tapering.

If that Dec. 8 marathon ends up being warm, you just need to give up on Texas and find a marathon up north!

Fantastic race in the heat--very smart to save your marathon for a better day.

From Russ on Mon, Nov 18, 2013 at 10:32:58 from 70.196.199.170

Good call on backing down. Your HR was through the roof even on slower paces, so way to listen to your body vs the conditions in every way. Hopefully the 8th will behave a bit more.

From SlowJoe on Mon, Nov 18, 2013 at 10:50:36 from 168.215.171.129

I think we not had the exact same experience out there. Now you can bounce back quickly and PR in aggieland. Good run.

Good decisions in dealing with such an impossible situation. Even though you aren't happy with your time, you are in the top 1% with it -- that is a fantastic result; hard to believe there were 9 other guys in your age group who were just as fast but I am seeing that more and more lately. I don't recall ever seeing your HR that high, pretty amazing. If you could duplicate that HR in a cool-weather race who knows what you would end up with. Congratulations, great job.

DL, I saw that the CIM marathon was on the 8th of December and thought about flying out there and running it, then my wife reminded me we are hosting a party on the 7th so I couldn't go. :-(

You guys don't know how much it killed me to back off and run the Half. I was pretty bummed. I know Joe was pretty disappointed too.

Flat, you're right, 184 is the highest I've ever measured my HR...and I could feel it!

Good plan, IJR and nice running!

Isn't Dallas on the 8th, too? Don't know which one is better.

I read the following review on marathonguide.com about College Station - so be prepared!!! :-)

"My only critique is the course through the A&M campus. It was NOT marked well around Military Walk and the MSC and there weren't enough volunteers directing. I saw several runners get lost around this area."

From I Just Run on Mon, Nov 18, 2013 at 15:33:15 from 166.147.72.36

DH

Now I'm thinking I should scrap this idea.

I looked at Dallas but since we're hosting a party Saturday evening I'm going to have to just leave Sunday morning and I'm afraid Dallas is too far to drive.

From derhammer on Mon, Nov 18, 2013 at 15:40:59 from 64.245.52.2

I guess it all depends on what you what to achieve by getting in another marathon and weighing what the pros and cons of doing so are. There are some good half marathons coming up - 3M, Austin, Moe's, that might be better training / build up to Boston, instead of having to take 2-3 weeks to recover from a full marathon before hitting the cycle again. Decisions, decisions. :-)

From DLTheo on Mon, Nov 18, 2013 at 15:41:20 from 155.130.107.41

It does seem dangerous for you to run in a race where other runners have gotten lost before ;)

Seriously, though, they may have learned from that mistake and improved the course and/or markings through that area.

From Yasir on Mon, Nov 18, 2013 at 16:03:25 from 99.20.240.112

Waited all day sunday for updates. Great run and a good idea holding back for a better weather to run the full. you dont want to wast all that fitness on half par run. Nice for you to see your daughter cross the finish line I hope some day I get to see my daughter does the same. Recover and get back at again. Great job

From Rye on Tue, Nov 19, 2013 at 11:36:06 from 75.174.50.28

Nicely done IJR....good race and like you said....spending time with the daughter is always great.

From Dave S on Wed, Nov 20, 2013 at 15:58:01 from 63.248.20.148

Nice job! Sounds like the heat was pretty brutal. Probably a good call to switch to the half and save that great fitness you have right now for another race!

From Matt Schreiber on Wed, Nov 20, 2013 at 21:52:34 from 66.17.102.185

You're much smarter than me. I've yet to learn the importance of backing off when the weather is crap. :) Great run Preston and good call on the upcoming marathon. Smart move.
