No running today...the kids are at home and we stayed up late playing games.

As I am reflecting over the year in running I realized that I have been dealing with this toe issure since mid May. I think I have completly destroyed my second toe as it now has an ugly crook in it and now I can't really move it or push down with it at all. I think I've just torn all of the tendons/ligaments in the joint completly loose. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Last the doctor said was that he could to cut the bone and shorten it. (I don't want to have surgery!) Since then I lost all muscle control of it. I can't really move it or push down at all. It continues to be sore...sometimes better sometimes worse. Although I am pretty tolerant to pain I'm not sure if I can keep up the effort for much longer.

Thanx for checking on me. I took 2 weeks of from running until today (12 easy miles today). You had one solid running year get the rest I know never tell a runner to rest but you earned it. I'm leaning toward Champaign Illinois Marathon on April 25. Please spread the word if any runners from here want to join me or maybe you (: rest rest

Sorry to hear about the toe, hopefully you can figure something out and move forward. Rest up Preston! Easier said than done.

Is it called surgery if they just cut it off? :) I wonder if taking a little time off would even help it back in the right direction or if it's something that would require some sort of long break. Seems like it'd be a nuisance. Hopefully you can get it figured out!

I agree, that's a tough decision, time off might not even help much and your conditioning could get shot for nothing. Sometimes a PT or chiro might have a good suggestion about something like that. Those guys can be pretty good at stuff like this, though you may have already done that. Best of luck.

Flat has a good suggestion. You might want to get back on the bike for a while. I don't want to see you stop running, but if you are destroying parts of your body and it's painful too, where does it end?

From Tom Slick on Wed, Dec 24, 2014 at 10:20:46 from 69.171.160.234

Sorry to hear your dilemma involving your "second toe". I have lived with bunion on my left foot big toe and disintegrating cartilage in the knuckle joint of my right big toe. I've done a bunch of things to lessen the pain generated by both big toes. One thing that I did was to get out of my Brooks Addiction shoes and change to Altras. The toe box is nice and wide so my toes are not cramped and the Zero Drop platform seems to be so good for my feet, especially my toes.....I also had a problem with my second toe on my left foot that I've been wearing a toe straightener on in the evenings at home.

Check it out, maybe this can help you!

Please, no one convince him to get back on the bike!

Sorry to hear this Preston. Time off might help...and it might not - tough to know the right thing to do. Hope you are 100% again soon!

Guys, the bad thing is I was off for weeks in the summer when my shoulder was broken and it didn't heal then. Not sure what to do since I really don't want surgery.

Tom,

Funny you should mention Altras as I just ordered a pair a couple of day before your post. I just got them and have run in them once. They sure look funny but are really comfortable. Hopefully they will help.
