Random Thoughts:

I have run 26 out of the last 30 days. So far so good, other than I'm slow and out of condition.

I'm taking today. Everything is good other than I went to bed late last night. I'll start again tomorrow.

I have about 13 weeks before the Rock-N-Roll Marathon in San Antonio. Hopefully I will really begin improving in the next few weeks. My only concern is training in this heat. With the heat, humidity and dew point we have here in central Texas it makes it very difficult to successfully complete any long runs. I feel I need to be running some 15 mile + runs soon.

I'm not really sure I know what I want to accomplish in this upcoming marathon. Originally I had convinced myself that a 3:22 was now my base time and it would only get better from there. But now, with the injury and loss of training time, I have a lot of doubt. I almost wish I could just consider this a "fun run" and take it really easy but that is so against my internal gut feeling it's impossible for me to seriously consider. I will put out a full effort or bonk trying.

Thursday I am going to Illinois for a vacation. We will be there for about 10 days. I'm hoping to get some really good training in while I'm there and boost my confidence. The weather should be much cooler than here in Texas.

As a friendly observer, I'd recommend that you reset your goals for this marathon to be more about your mindset during the race versus your time at the finish. Your body has just gone through a traumatic event and you won't know for a while how long it will take to get back to normal. As much as we hate to admit it the recuperation time is longer as we age. I'd guess it will take 6-9 months or longer to get back to 3:22 fitness level. Just enjoy it and make this your comeback marathon, but not for time. That's my $0.03 (an extra penny for good measure).

Great advice Russ...Thanks!

Although I'm thinking about changing my blog to say I'm 25 years old and see what feedback I get about my running. :-)

(I guess I would need to change my profile picture too.)

Hahahaha! I literally laughed out loud on that one. So true.

Huh....I was dead serious!

I hope you get some good runs in your trip up north. Today Chicago is 83 degrees, 59% humidity, and dew point is 67. Go make the most of it, man!

Nothing wrong with changing up your goals. You do have a good jump though on your base with all the miles that you are running. The speed will come back fast when you have a good base. 13 weeks is quite a bit of time. You may surprise yourself.

Ummmm well... When I first injured myself and could not run that winter and was getting ready for Boston, I was truly surprised how quickly my fitness came back with only 12 weeks to train. I was 41 then. I really thought I could PR- but of course record heat that race changed all those ideas.

Now, my layoff has been MUCH longer and I see that it is going to take quite some time to get my base back, then speed.

I see nothing wrong with changing goals, but let the body set the goal, and forget the mind.
