Where do I start? I was supposed to run a Tempo Run today and my Long Run on Saturday. I am heading to a Team Roping competition tomorrow and will be competing on Saturday morning so a long run that day is not an option. I got the bright idea to run my Long Run today and then squeeze in my Tempo Run on Friday while I'm on the road to the event.

Maybe this was a bad idea...? or maybe it's just more of the same old thing I've been struggling with all along, I don't really know. The first few miles seemed great, my HR seemed good and my times were where I thought they should be but about mile 12-13 I felt like I was getting really hot. By this time my shoes were full of sweat to the point I was slinging water out of them every stride. Finally at mile 15 I decided this was not worth the effort and I stopped, rested and tried to cool down. Sweat was pouring off of me like I was a soaker hose. From that point on in I ran and walked and tried to cool down. My muscles got tight during this time making the last four miles misrable.

Not a very sucessful run but I got it in the books. I am going to try and go and find some different shoes that don't have as much padding as this holds all the sweat (do you know how much a soaked pair of Saucony Ride 4's and socks weigh?...a lot!). I also need to figure out my fueling better too. I drank 112 oz of fluid before and immediatly after the run and still lost 6 lbs.

Way to rough it out Preston! Sounds like a tough run under tough conditions. 90% humidity yikes!

Wow - if I wrote a Boston report this would be it. Man, it's hot out there. I guess my question is, if you are running your next marathon in December, why are you running 18 miles now? Esp in this heat. I really don't see a need. Save these really long runs for the marathon training cycle. You are 5 months away from your marathon. Try to use the summer to work speed, stamina, and leg strength (hill sprints.)

DH,

I'm really doing this training cycle because Rye (Ryan) wanted to do it and I wanted to be his support. Also, I figure I have a long way to go to reach my potential and the only way to get there is to push the envolope. There is also an outside chance I find a September marathon (maybe TOU) and run it. In any case I just don't like to "just run", I'd rather have a goal in mind...so I guess that's why I'm doing it.

That's a lot of miles in the heat, I'm starting to convert to DH's point of view on this one. But if you are recovering from it ok, and want to tough it out, it probably will pay some dividends. Way to stick it out.

Joe and DH.... Preston is such a great guy to encourage me like he is with doing this RLRF Program with me. Hopefully he will win lots of money roping and be able to run TOU with me.

IJR- I am with you on a goal to keep you sharp. Once you officially decide on TOU then you can adjust accordingly (DH is right if you decide only on the Dec marathon). Oh, I still wonder about fueling- in those kind of conditions, you need to be taking in fuel more often. Sorry to lecture.
