Biking

Evening Exercise: Went over to the DARK side this evening... The bikers from work (actually Callie) talked me into biking with them this evening. Borrowed a bike, we rode 15.33 miles and averaged right at 15 mph, my average heart rate was 139 bpm. They all came out to my house and we rode my running roads. I think the liked the hills :-) The elevation change is about 800 feet.

Running:

I ran by myself this morning. After the first 1/2 mile I decided to run a 5K just to see what it felt like (it was hot and humid and some wind) but I felt pretty good. Based on this I believe I can break the 20:00 mark on a 5K. After that I took a short break and then ran 3 easy miles. Its funny my knee didn't really bother me at all on the first fast 3.1 miles but on the easy miles the further I went the more it hurt. Can't really figure out the rhyme or reason for the intermittent pain...maybe the bone spur is floating around and when it gets in a certain position it hurts more...?

Nice run & strong finish to your 5k! Running strong at 51, that's awesome ... Happy Birthday! Maybe you should focus on speed work a few weeks & keep the mileage down while the knee continues to improve.

I put some focus on it this Spring & went from a 21:07 last fall to a 18:54 last month. My increased mileage helped to of course, but it was the first time I had ever concentrated on speed work, and I think it made a big difference! I have used the online calculators that predict your race time based on shorter distance races, always with pretty good accuracy. At 45, I can't go from training for one marathon to the next ... so my plan is to do a speed cycle after every marathon ... so I have the speed to reach my next goal once I have put the mileage in!

I think I fixed my spreadsheet that calculates the HR percent. As you can see I was pretty hight on the last two miles. It felt like it on the third+ mile!

That looks right. When I notice that your max had to be about 245 I figured it either was a mistake or you'd better see a doctor.

PS- I notice my injuries hurt less when I run faster... I always assume its the blood flowing and the muscles warming up - but your knee is a different matter.
