Well, even Secretariat lost his first race before going on to win the Triple Crown...!

I am glad I ran the race but honestly disippointed with the final results. 20 days of virtually no training and a bone spur really didn't give me a very good chance to accomplish my goal. As you can see from the chart below I ran right at 8:00 pace for 21 miles. At 21.5 miles my knee with the bone spur basiclly locked up and I had to walk for about 30 seconds. This happened 3 or 4 more times before the end of the race. My conditioning was not good enought either. Two months ago I ran 21.5 miles at a 7:47 pace and my heart rate avg. was 154 (71% of my max heart rate) (and hotter weather and a very hilly course). As you can see my heart rate avg. for this race was 165 (82% of my max. heart rate).

The weather conditions at the race were tough. Low 40's, raining, some small hail, lightning, and very windy. I was very cold throughout the race, especially my hands and feet.

Hey, congrats again. To make it through the whole race (and those conditions) with a pretty decent time after being out for 20 of the most important training days says a lot. I might not have even tried, so my hat is off to you. Your next one will be a big PR, that is for sure.

From Dave S on Mon, May 02, 2011 at 16:17:51 from 4.254.231.192

Congrats on running a great race after all the obstacles you faced. 1 or 2 weeks ago you didn't know if you'd even be able to run at all. Most guys over 50 would love to get a time that fast running healthy especially for a first marathon. You'll get a big PR in the next one that you get to healthy.

From flatlander on Mon, May 02, 2011 at 16:56:08 from 198.207.244.102

I think that is an excellent time, and even with the training problems and the problems at the end you didn't slow down that much. Low 9s and high 8s on a bad knee is commendable. You have one under your belt now and after the next one you will be revising your goals times, of that I am sure. Good job.

From SlowJoe'sGrl on Mon, May 02, 2011 at 17:25:13 from 184.79.24.255

Congrats! I'm certain you will drop those 3 min easily on your next one. It was also my first, but I've run particpated in a number of big races. This was the first race that I was absolutely miserable the entire time. I'm usually hamming it up and smiling for the cameras. It was just plain tough out there. A completly different experience from last year at OKC where I ran the half. Be proud! And, now you can say that you are truly hardcore to have run a marathon in hail. Really...who does that?

From Steam8 on Tue, May 03, 2011 at 10:18:52 from 166.70.55.77

Congratulations! Running marathons in the rain and cold makes it difficult and running through an injury just tops it off. I had bloody blisters all over my feet after one last June. You will be stronger and more determined for racing such a hard race injured and in challenging weather!

From I Just Run on Tue, May 03, 2011 at 16:39:57 from 67.79.11.242

Thanks everybody for the encouraging words... Even though I did not reach my goal I'm glad I tried! This experience has just made me more determined to reach the goal and even set new ones. Now I believe I can call myself a true "runner" (although I still have a lot to learn!). I can't wait to get back to training after my toes, blisters, bone spurs, strains and sprains heal :) Man...this is FUN...!

From SlowJoe'sGrl on Tue, May 03, 2011 at 17:02:20 from 184.79.24.255

They will likely have better pictures. Brightroom isn't done identifying all of the bib numbers yet in their photos. They only have a one of me, and I look completely miserable. I really hope they got a good finish line one for me.

From I Just Run on Tue, May 03, 2011 at 17:08:57 from 67.79.11.242

Hey SlowJoe's Grl,

Thanks for the info. I'll keep looking. BTW...I really want to congradulate you on the race. After I finished it started to hail really hard. I was thinking about the ones still racing...I know it was tough! My feet and hands were so cold I thought I had frostbite!

IJR - Congratulations on a truly remarkable race and unbelievable time for your first marathon ... or any marathon for someone over 50! I realize you missed your BQ goal by just a couple minutes, but considering the conditions and your injury battles, that performance is amazing! Your splits were consistent & strong, it is tough for anyone to know what hurdles may come in the last 10k, and even though that is where you lost the couple minutes you needed, those are still great splits on a leg that locked up! You'll get it next time, wishing you a full and speedy recovery!

From I Just Run on Thu, May 05, 2011 at 17:28:05 from 67.79.11.242

Thanks JG for the encourging words. I'm excited about trying again!

From Rossy on Fri, May 06, 2011 at 00:17:31 from 167.138.234.18

Preston, 3:38 is not bad at all. And considering the weather conditions along with that darn knee, I'm very, very impressed!!! I'm really glad you ran it and this is want the marathon is truly all about; that is, fighting through the pain, the adversity, and the dreadful weather. Again, great job!!!
