WOW…what a GREAT experience!

Although my race plan did not fall into place I had a wonderful time running Boston. Being my first time I was in awe of race production, runner support and crowd size and enthusiasm.

I was able to meet up with several of my FastRunningBlog buddies including JG (Jonathan), DerHammer (David), RaTtLeTrAp (Mike), Tom Slick (Lloyd) and Hillbilly Runner (Ronnie). I’m sorry I never was able to catch up with Tom K as our paths just never crossed.

Thanks to JG for picking me up at the airport, spending time with me and helping me pace for the first 7 miles of the race. Also, thanks to RaTtLeTrAp and his wife (Kim) for spending lots of time with me and my family. This was a trip that I will cherish and have fond memories for years to come! I also met a new friend (Kevin)  whom I hope will be join us on the Blog soon.

I really have so much to talk about the trip and race but I will try and keep it short as I know there are so many writing reports now. For now I will simply insert a couple of comments about the race and the actual mile splits for reference.

Basically, this was a “Run Fail”. I believe I went into this race in the best condition I have ever been in. All of my training runs, mileage and indication showed I should have been able to run below 3:15 but for the last few days I was having problems (don’t want to discuss on the blog) that was causing me to continually be dehydrated. The indication of this problem showed up from the start of the race and continued to get worse throughout. I have run with my HR monitor so much and watched my weight so much I can easily tell when this limiting situation will occur. My heart rate, from the start of the race, was running about 10 beats per minute faster than it should have been. As I ran the first few miles I remember JG asking me how I was feeling and I told him my legs felt a little stiff and heavy and my HR was way up.

Bottom line, it was not my best race although the effort was there. I know I’ll run it again and PR in a big way some day.

Solid effort Preston! Impressive miles 22 & 23. Sorry to hear about the dehydration and heavy legs. You are definitely in shape for sub 3:15 but it wasn't your day to do it. Very soon. So glad you got to have such an awesome experience and I have no doubt you'll be back for a PR here and elsewhere.

From Yasir on Wed, Apr 23, 2014 at 16:30:28 from 99.20.240.112

Great job I have been waiting for you and dehammer's updates. like you said its all about your effort on that day. Please rest rest and recover. Congeratulations on your effort in a very special race. I am glad tha everyone was safe.

Congrats on your first Boston finish! Bad luck to have on off-day/illness on race day, but you held strong. Even healthy, most of us fall apart at the end of that course! Great job.

From Matt Schreiber on Wed, Apr 23, 2014 at 21:23:18 from 66.17.108.16

Awesome job Preston. That's great you got to meet so many people. On the runner tracker thing your splits were absolutely perfect for quite some time - ticking off at the exact same pace. Nice work. Looking forward to your big PR!

From Dave S on Thu, Apr 24, 2014 at 12:56:50 from 63.248.20.148

Nice job! Sounds like you had an overall great experience. I know the time wasn't quite what you wanted but it was still a BQ time which is never too bad a thing.

From I Just Run on Thu, Apr 24, 2014 at 15:19:11 from 67.79.11.242

Russ,

Mile 22 and 23 is where I decided to push it a little and see if there was any way for me to end strong. Needless to say that's when I pushed too hard and entered the bonk-zone. A HR of about 160 bpm is about the max HR I can maintain for long distances. As you can see I was pushing that for the first 20 miles. That is what was holding me back. I have run many, many times much faster than this with a HR around 150...oh well!

Yasir,

Yes it was a great experience. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I'm excited for the time you can go and run it too!

Thanks Joe,

I was just perplexed and somewhat disappointed even in the first few miles knowing it wasn't going to be a good "performance" day. Sure would have liked to PR here in Boston.

Matt,

The best part of the trip was spending time with some of our friends on the Blog. It was as if we were old friends and knew each other well. Regarding the times, they were pretty even because I was basically running by effort (HR). I wanted to run faster but knew if I did I would blow-up.That's one advantage or disadvantage, depending on how you look at it about running with/by HR effort so much. I think I will need to work on form (stride length/cadence) to really improve.

Dave,

Thanks...A BQ and a finish close to the top 10%, in my age group, is not so bad. Also, If I had run a big PR I might not have anything to shoot for in the future! :-)

From Derunzo on Thu, Apr 24, 2014 at 16:27:58 from 24.218.179.128

Hey Preston.... sorry I missed you. I kept saying to my wife and kids, "I've gotta see I Just Run." I was searching the crowds for you big time. Sorry you were feeling off on race day. You still rocked it!

From Tom Slick on Fri, Apr 25, 2014 at 10:11:32 from 168.179.157.44

Well done Bro-IJR....

From derhammer on Fri, Apr 25, 2014 at 21:18:01 from 72.182.105.29

Nice report Preston. It was great spending time with you - even if it was in a basement. lol.

From Hillbilly Runner on Sat, Apr 26, 2014 at 05:38:20 from 207.162.186.109

Congratulation on your first Boston. If you ran that good not feeling 100% you'll kill this course next time. It was nice to meet you. I wish we'd got to hang out some, in Boston time goes by so quickly and our timimg was just a little off. Hope the recovery is going well. Congratulations again....

From Tom K on Thu, May 01, 2014 at 07:08:24 from 174.58.4.250

Sorry we didn't get to meet up there. Great race, IJR! You did it! Miles 22 & 23 - Wow!

From flatlander on Thu, May 01, 2014 at 21:21:47 from 76.31.9.237

Sorry so late getting to this, but great report and very interesting. Definitely had something going with the heart rate there -- it is a bummer when it happens. Glad you had a great time; I am certainly looking forward to my first one, and I'll be looking for lots of advice.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Fri, May 02, 2014 at 09:00:23 from 98.203.229.149

You ran a great race, Preston! Boston is a tough course and the adrenaline was flowing like crazy this year. I didn't wear my monitor, but I'm sure my heart rate was off the charts with all the excitement and crowd support right from the start. I haven't had a great "run" in Boston yet after 3 years. Each race has been a great event though and I go home happy every year no matter what my time was :)

Kym and I really enjoyed hanging out with you, Sarah and Callie. We're looking forward to next time. Maybe in Washington?

From rAtTLeTrAp on Fri, May 02, 2014 at 09:01:48 from 98.203.229.149

Next time you run Boston I'll loan you my race duds and Derunzo will be able to pick you out of the crowd :)
