I started to simply cut and paste last year’s race report since this year and last year are very close to the same. J The only real difference is that this year I had some trouble with my calves cramping which caused me to take it a little easier on a few miles.

The race is actually a really well executed and supported race, even though it is not very big. The course is very flat with only a few slight up hills and several long sloping down hills that make it feel really nice to run.

As you probably know I was not feeling very good about my chances of pulling off a good race. My main concern was that I would bonk at the 18-20 mile mark. I felt like I succeeded on only one of my four 20 mile training runs. The other three I basically bonked, even though I was running at a much slower pace. I guess a little rest, race day magic and decent weather got me out of that funk.

The weather was pretty good at 54 degrees at the start and 62 at the end. It was very humid/foggy/misting at the start but okay for me.

I started out again, with about the 3:40 pace group just because I knew they would start way too fast, which would be about where I wanted to start. Ha ha, I actually didn’t catch the 3:30 group until about mile 16 and I was a couple of minutes behind them to start. Running was pretty uneventful as I basically ran by myself and passing people all of the race. I was my cheerful self, talking to everyone I passed, although I think it just annoys most people. I tried to get a couple of people to race me at about the 24 mile mark but no one would take the challenge. J

I wasn’t able to stay for the awards and get my official time. Last year I placed 2nd in my age group. I’ll update the blog and times when it get posted.

I am relieved to get the BQ out of the way. This race actually gave me some confidence that I can break 3:20 again and possibly shoot for a new PR, even though I gained a few years since I ran the 3:18.

Thanks guys for all your encouragement…It really is a help…!!!! Hope to get to see some of you at Boston 2020 (Just got to get Callie, my daughter qualified now!)

I am posting both last year's paces and this year's paces so you can see how similar they are!

Outstanding race, I m so happy that you pulled a great time and a big BQ. Now I have to pull it all together so I can return to Boston in 2020 and run the 124th Running of the Boston Marathon with you and Callie! Way to getter done!

From Rhett on Sun, Mar 03, 2019 at 09:52:55 from 66.185.237.66

Great race. You trained hard, raced smart, and nailed the BQ!

From JG on Sun, Mar 03, 2019 at 19:06:16 from 174.228.154.178

Great job Preston. Amazing similarities, looks like the calf issues helped keep your HR in check, otherwise you would have beat that young dude's times from last year. :)

As you know, I will do everything I can to get there next year, psyched that you are IN comfortably. I do not think it is fair that I have to run 5 minutes faster than you! :)

From I Just Run on Sun, Mar 03, 2019 at 19:27:14 from 199.38.187.9

JG, I know the runner and competitor you are and have no doubt you will be there in 2020! BTW... I really don't like it that they keep giving me more time. I want to get faster, not get slower!

From Yasir on Mon, Mar 04, 2019 at 12:39:55 from 99.20.240.16

Great race Preston specially with the calves issues its so hard to ignore calves pain. You right about how close these two races are even your age group spot. You got the 3:20 this year easy just take care of these calves. Congrats on making your BQ and good luck to Callie.

From Dan on Tue, Mar 05, 2019 at 06:52:51 from 104.178.66.147

Solid race to say the least! I'm confident you could break 3:20 again. Go for your goal of 3:16.

Glad to see another BQ!

From Tom K on Tue, Mar 05, 2019 at 11:12:16 from 107.77.253.11

Great race, man! Congrats on the BQ! If some dude that passed me started a conversation, my reaction would depend on my mental state ay the time. If i was falling apart, i would probably blame you and not my poor training!
