WoooooHooooooo......MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT...!!!!

After setting my new goal of qualifing for Boston on my first Marathon, I decided I needed to increase my speed quite  bit to feel comfortable about this goal. I went out today and ran my 10 mile hilly route at a determined pace of 7:30. As you can see at the end I was actually 7:23...! After seeing what my heart rate was during the Austin Half-Marathon I realized I now can maintain a higher heart rate for a longer period of time. Even at the pace today my heart rate was better than the race last week. Now, next up, to run below 1:40:00 next weekend at the Moe's Half Marathon then figure out how to train for the Oklahoma City Marathon on May 1st....Any suggestions would be appriciated. (BTW...I think I have to run a 3:35:00 to qualify for Boston).

Nice! Boy, you know how to pick them, don't you? I heard from a couple of group runners that Moe's is very hilly as well. Lots of cows, too. :-)

BTW- I sent you a PM with some training info.

What a great run, looks like you had the gas pedal down the whole time! 1:40 should be easy if the terrain isn't too much tougher than this run.

Der Hammer,

It's good the hear from you...glad you're back. When I signed up for Moe's I thought it was relativly flat, now several people have said it's pretty much hilly. I know the roads (never run them) but I'm thinking about running the route on Sunday (slow) just to get a feel and have a better game plan than I did in Austin. I know they aren't as tough as my normal run. I'm pretty sure, if I can prepare properly this week, I will be able to break the 1:40 time based on my 7:23 pace over 10 miles this morning. The biggest question now is can I BQ on May 1st in Oklahoma...? I'm pretty sure I'm going to go for it! My wife thinks it's a good idea for a vacation...wow, now that puts a lot of pressure on me...!!

Slow Joe,

Yeah...I'm trying to find out how far the "gas petal" goes... don't want to run the wheels off this old body or worse yet blow the engine...:)

Don't let age slow you down. There is a guy in our group who is 61 and ran a 3:20 in Chicago last year, and another guy over 60 who runs in the 3:20's and only runs 4 days a week when training!
