KEEP THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE

Coach John McKay of USC said this to his team after they had been humiliated 51-0 by Notre Dame.

McKay came into the locker room and saw a group of beaten worn-out and thoroughly depressed young football players who were not accustomed to losing. He stood up on a bench and said, “Men, let’s keep this in perspective. There are 800 million Chinese who don’t even know this game was played.” That’s what you call perspective.

Okay, here is the real race report:  DNF

I was so mad at myself I just couldn't bear to write a race report until now. Although running and racing is not really that important to me I still driven to accomplish something when I set out to do it. This pursuit to BQ has me frustrated. I have managed to flunder in my effort to achieve the goal.

I should have BQ'd on my first marathon but I went into it missing 4 weeks of training because of a bone spur. My second marathon I ruined by overconfidence and a pace who had me on a 3:09 marathon at 16 miles. My third marathon I tried to run 4 weeks after my third. I was simply not recovered and now this last marathon and ...how dumb is this... on this marathon I missed the full marathon cut-off and ran 3 miles before I realized it! Anyway, now I find myself contemplating running OKC again it 4 weeks :-(

Anyway, here are my splits through the 16 miles. Miles 13-16 are erratic as I was trying to figure out what to do. I ended up running 22 miles before I quit all together.

ARRRGGGHH!

I was getting the emails, and you were looking good until I got a really weird 13.1 split email.

Sorry to hear that, I know it must be pretty crappy.

From Tom K on Sun, Feb 24, 2013 at 11:30:37 from 108.9.33.153

wow. Your second 5k was faster than your first. You were doing great. I'm sorry, man.

From DLTheo on Sun, Feb 24, 2013 at 12:16:30 from 76.28.161.119

So sorry to hear that Preston. Bummer.

Dust yourself off and pick the next race.

Yikes - so sorry to hear this. I couldn't figure out what was going on when I checked your splits earlier. I guess the bright spot is you should still be in good shape and not be worn out. Lot's of people say the Eugene marathon is great. It's April 28th.

From Rye on Sun, Feb 24, 2013 at 15:01:47 from 65.129.90.86

Sorry Preston! Wish everything went smoothly....sometimes is just doesn't. :)

From JG on Sun, Feb 24, 2013 at 20:38:13 from 174.49.78.66

Sometimes you just have to roll with the punches, brush off the dust, & move on with a vengeance. I would expect nothing less from you. Plenty of options for a Spring marathon, or you can switch gears & crush a Half, then reboot for a fall marathon.

From Dave S on Tue, Mar 05, 2013 at 11:01:03 from 63.248.248.225

Ahhh man. That had to be so disappointing. It looks like you were running a very smart race to get that BQ. Conservative but far enough under BQ pace to have a nice cushion. Now I guess you'll just have to look at it as a great training run for OKC if you decide to run it.

Interesting how much your heart rate went up after 13 miles when you realized the mistake. Must have been from the extra stress from being upset.

From DLTheo on Tue, Mar 05, 2013 at 11:22:38 from 76.28.161.119

Since you didn't run the whole way, and you slowed down after 16, I think OKC should be very reasonable. It's the last 4 miles that kill you.

From Carl on Wed, Mar 06, 2013 at 18:37:24 from 24.19.78.45

Wow! That's just aweful!

You should email the race director about this. Hopefully, your info can prevent the same thing happening to another runner next year. Who know's... maybe they'll give you a free entry for next year?

I hope you recover well and give that BQ another attempt. I'll be at Boston in 2014. It would be cool to meet you face-to-face over there!

From butlerbrunning on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 13:55:28 from 132.3.49.80

Hey man sorry to hear about Cow town...If you decided to come up to the city let me know and if I am recovered enough i'll come out and run some with you. I would watch the weather on the race up here..we are due for a good weather day.

From Lily on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 14:03:17 from 67.199.178.95

I am so sorry. Do not lose your hope. You can still do this.

From I Just Run on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 15:25:49 from 67.79.11.242

Thanks everybody! I'm over my crying and ready to get back to work. OKC is in my sights right now but I may wait until a couple of days before the race to actually decide since the weather is so sketchy at that time of year in Oklahoma.

I do really appriciate all of you guys support as I have no running buddies except for on this blog!
