Change of plan...NO DAY Off ... Callie (my daughter) came home this afternoon. We are all going the Walk for Life in Austin tomorrow. Callie wanted to run this evening so I ran 2 miles with her at 9:40 pace. I don't think this short/slow run will do any harm. Tomorrow will be easy with only an hour or so of walking.

Resting for the 3M half marathon on Sunday. I started looking at the race and figured out it's a point to point race and not a loop. It is also a net 315' elevation drop. This will be interesting as all of the races I've run so far were loops and mostly hilly. I'm really not sure what I can do on a downhill course like this but I'm thinking about aiming for a 7:15 pace but would really like to run a 7:07 pace. The first four miles seem to be a net 0' elevation drop and then the decent begins. If I can stick at about 7:15 for the first four miles I might be able to pull off the 7:07 avg. If I bonk it's ok since this is only a training run anyway :-) I'm also not sure how well I can do with only a couple of rest days after several hard workout days.

1 Timothy 6:11

But you, Timothy, man of God: Run for your life from all this. Pursue a righteous life—a life of wonder, faith, love, steadiness, courtesy. Run hard and fast in the faith. Seize the eternal life, the life you were called to, the life you so fervently embraced in the presence of so many witnesses.

Wow - I had no idea you were not aware of the course. It's known as a very fast course - just enough decent for speed but not enough to completely beat your legs up. You will need to catch a bus at the end that will bring you back up to your car at the start.

there are a couple of rollers between 9 and 10.5 miles. Your last hill is at 10.5 miles and it is all down hill from there.

Don't forget - it is a 6:45 am start!

DH,

I hadn't really paid much attention to it and then I started looking on the website (which by the way is pretty hard to find stuff on). I'm really curious how much speed can be picked up on that much down hill running. I almost hate to run all-out and have a PR that I can never reach on a normal course.

Thanks for telling me about the start time, I hadn't found that on the website.

Every course is different, as are the weather conditions we run them in. An 'aided' course only helps your legs to turnover faster ... if you keep training, you will eventually run a faster time on a harder course ... and you can always more directly measure your improvement by running the same course again next year ... of course weather, nutrition, where you are in your training cycle, etc. will still be variables that will affect your performance.

JG - where have you been? When I try to go to your blog it kicks me to the home page.

Focusing on some life challenges that make running secondary for a while ... I will be back on here in due time ... and look forward to meeting you in Boston!

Good luck at the 3M. If you are like me, you will find it much easier to hit your splits going downhill.

I was thinking about wearing some roller blades to really improve my pace!

I can get you a good deal on a bus ticket.

You'll be surprised at what you can do on a net downhill course. You're gonna kill it. I'm looking forward to the report.

Good luck tomorrow. I didn't know we had downhill courses in TX! You'll kill it!

From Jody on Sat, Jan 28, 2012 at 20:58:55 from 75.141.131.35

Just giving you an update on Cowtown - We ran the first half of the course today and it goes through some interesting neighborhoods and then goes through the Stockyards. I like running there, but the cobblestone streets made me nervous - and if Joe T's had been open, I might have stopped to eat. There is a big hill as you head into downtown (the Main Street Bridge) that is .5 mile long, but you get a slight downhill right after. You still have quite a few hills left so I wouldn't kill yourself on it. It is a great course, very tough.

Good Luck on your race!
