So yesterday I started getting some swelling on my kneecap. This hasn't happened before but it could be several things. One is I haven't taken any Ibuprofen for a while or it could be increased irritation but there is no additional pain. The pain is only when I bend my knee, not when I strike the ground with my foot.

I decided to go ahead and workout/run today so I went to the gym and did alternating elliptical and run (2/2/2/2/2/1.5/1.5). Was planning on 12 althogher but I ran out of time. No rest between and the runs were 7:30/1% incline.

11 miles on a bum knee? Take it easy brother ... I am counting on running Boston '14 with you!

From Lily on Tue, Jan 22, 2013 at 10:25:13 from 67.199.178.95

Ugh! Have you had your knee checked out at all? Great 11 regardless.

From I Just Run on Tue, Jan 22, 2013 at 10:44:47 from 67.79.11.242

I haven't had it checked out because I know the only thing they will say is to rest it for a while. I've convinced myself that it's the same problem I had back in the spring of '11. It was a bone spur that broke off and was floating in my knee. After four weeks I went to the doctor who told me that it was a bone spur that broke off and floating around in my knee. I ask her what I could do because I wanted to run a marathon in two weeks. She said to "take 5-6 Ibuprofen and run" and that it would desolve itself in about 6 weeks. Recently I was taking Ibuprofen for the pain but DTheo told me about the negative effects of vitamin-I and runners so I've swore myself off of it. I'm hoping I can just maintain for the next couple of weeks, have a really good 20 mile run two weeks out from my marathon and then taper and finally nail the BQ I've been pursuing. Sounds like a crybaby saga doesn't it!

I would make that 20 miler 3 weeks out ... your legs have to be fresh to run 26! Keep the faith, I am confident you will nail it as long as you do not go out too fast the first half! I don't think I could swear off the Vitamin I, I have definitely scaled back ... but I need it when I run higher mileage!

JG,

Yes you're right, that's what I was thinking, not sure why I wrote it the way I did.

I think all of the vitamin-I was also messing with my kidneys.

From DLTheo on Tue, Jan 22, 2013 at 12:18:54 from 155.130.107.41

IJR, I didn't mean you had to completely cut out all ibuprofen! I do suspect that taking 5-6 right before or during a long run could've caused you to feel woozy and slow down last time, but taking it at other times should help you get over the knee pain. You might try taking some right before bed so they can do their stuff, but be long out of your system by the time you run.

I think I must be "the wicked" in your proverbs with my pro-ibuprofen stance.

Sorry to hear about your knee. I have not used this yet but my parents say good things about it as an alternative to Ibuprofen - http://aminoactiv.com/

It is a bit pricey though.
