Today I decided to try a longer bike ride. I'm not sure how it compares to a long run but it did take 2 hours and 45 minutes. I had to stop at mile 23 and get me some more gaterade at a corner store. I also stopped at mile 40 to take a short breather and get anoter good drink. When I compare my running HR and my biking HR I start to get a little worried that this training is only moderate at best. Over this 50 miles my HR averaged 134. That is basiclly a recovery HR for me. One of the problems is that while biking my HR goes down very quickly when I hit a downhill or an easy flat. It can drop from like 150 to 120 in about 30 seconds. When running I never give it a chance to drop so I can keep it at the higher rate continually throughout the run (whatever it is). I think my legs are getting more accustomed to the bike but they are still sore. I passed a lot of bikers on the road but all of them were just crusing a low speed. I didn't run into any of the serious guys :-) I didn't push really hard, although I was somewhat tired at the end. I just wasn't sure what to expect going that far at one time. I've only ridden about 25 miles at one time before this.

50 Miles @ 17.5 avg. speed (this includes a few stops at stop signs and lights but I turned off my watch when I stopped at the store and stopped once to get a drink)

Maybe next week I'll go 75 miles or maybe I'll try to increase my speed....Humm.

Sounds like the equivalent of a long run, if not more. Nice going. You'll be making it all the way up to Abilene if you keep going like this!

Hey Joe

I was actually thinking about riding to Gatesville where my parents live. That's about 125 miles. I'm thinking I could make it in about 8 hours with a few stops.

Just don't get any converts along the way -- too many bikers already. Seriously, to me this seems like a legitimate long-run workout, and I must admit it would feel great to be able to ride a bike 125 miles in one day.

Great ride! Those long rides or runs with a HR in the 120s or 130s are great for your aerobic base. Keep it hope. Just don't forget to come back to running when you're able.

Nice ride, you are becoming a biking machine! I rode 100 miles last Oct in just under 7 hours, just under 6 moving time (16 mph)... but you definitely bike faster than I do/did! I think you will be surprised how much all your biking helps your running when you get back to it ... it will just take about a month for your running muscles to get back up to full speed. (that was an uneducated, wild guess ... but I think fairly accurate!) :)

Thanks guys,

I really hope to start running again soon. With the weather starting to cool off I'm not sure I can ride. I need something that gets blood flowing to my hands and feet and biking just doesn't do that! My plan is to again try a couple of miles running first thing next week and see how it feels. My total bike miles were 225 last week, I'm hoping that equates to about 55 miles of running :-)
