This was supposed to be an easy long(er) day but for some reason it was hard/painful. First, when I run at 8:45 to 9:00 pace, I feel "clunky". There doesn't seem to be a rythem to my running. Second, I seemed to be stiff, my knee was tight, my left ankle had some weird needle like pains on the top of my foot and the ball of my left foot was sore.....Ahhhhhh....!

Okay...now I feel better. I decided to do a long (well long for me) low heart rate run keeping my HR at 140. Due to the hills on this run it was difficult since some of the hills are fairly long and others are steep. Overall I did pretty good. The weather was GREAT and the moon was full so the early part of the run was pretty cool....!

JG sent me information on a marathon in Logan UT that is right before the BQ regestration date. It looks like a great chance for me to qualify for Boston so I'm thinking very serious about going to it. If anyone know about it or has any suggestions I'm all ears (wait a minute, maybe that's why I can't run very fast...my ears catch too much wind :( )

Hey, sounds like a great plan for your BQ. I was just thinking about a September or October marathon myself but it's too hot in Texas. Running down a mountain in cooler weather sounds pretty appealing!

Nice run IJR - when are you just going to go have them take that dang thing out of your knee?

SJ - you will need to train lots of down hills (or a treadmill with the back on blocks) so your quads don't get trashed.

From flatlander on Tue, May 17, 2011 at 11:13:21 from 76.31.26.153

One more thing, the altitude will slow you down. I am doing one up there anyway, but it will slow you down by a few minutes. I don't think it is bad enough to stop you from getting a 3:30 if you run it smart, though.

From SlowJoe on Tue, May 17, 2011 at 11:30:25 from 131.59.200.82

Yeah I'm guessing those downhill marathons are big PR courses for folks that live there and are used to the elevation and hills, but tougher for those of us down here at 2000' and below. I agree that you could definitely still get a 3:30 though, and it's not like Texas has any marathons in September.

Hey Slow Joe... Maybe we can actually meet in person this time...if we both end up going :)

From SlowJoe on Tue, May 17, 2011 at 11:45:12 from 131.59.200.82

For sure. It's definitely worth thinking about, let me know if you decide anything. Would also be nice to find one within 1-day driving distance that isn't too hot, in either September or October. Gotta do some research....

Dang ... knee, ankle, and foot! You are a trooper getting 12 in ... good job, sounds like a shorter recovery day might be good for you tomorrow!

A great way to get a good read on Top of Utah is to go to FRB Race Results, search it, & read others experience. I read a few, and it appears the last 6 are pretty tough with some rolling hills, so Flat makes a good point to not go out too fast. But since the first 18 are downhill, you should be able to build a little cushion without pushing too hard. Both times I did St.George the elevation did not bother me because with the downhill you do not have to push hard aerobically for fast miles, although it can take a toll on the legs. On the flip side, St George finishes at 2,500' & the last 6 miles at TOU are at 4,500', so elevation might take a toll the last 6 miles when the terrain gets tougher! The way I figure, I think 3:30 is very realistic for you to target on this course, and if you have late race struggles, you can have yourself in position to cruise in sub 3:35! This course lends itself to a much faster time than OKC & you have 4 months to be ready! Besides, who wouldn't want a weekend retreat in Utah from September temperatures? :)

I assume that you,re talking about TOU marathon. I ran that one last year and I thought it was a very good marathon. I was planning to run it again this year if I hadn't been drawn in the St George lottery. The downhill portion is all very gradual and the temps are usually ideal. It was probably in the 30s at the start last year but quickly warmed to 50s and ended up perfect marathon weather. Higher altitude is always a disadvantage but with the downhill [if you do some training for it], and the cooler temps, I'll bet you would come close [probably faster] to what you would run on a flat sea level course at 70 to 80 deg.temps.

SlowJoe - you see, I knew without a doubt you would get the itch! Wait until Houston next year, yeah, right!

From I Just Run on Tue, May 17, 2011 at 12:06:22 from 67.79.11.242

It's all sounding pretty good to me! I just had it in pencil on my calendar before but now I've put it in ink (erasable). Now to get my body well! The week after I registered for OKC is when my knee problem started :(

Come on Joe...Don't listen to him...;{

From SlowJoe on Tue, May 17, 2011 at 12:27:10 from 131.59.200.80

DH - yeah, yeah, I know. Now that the post-marathon funk has passed I think I've decided waiting 8-9 months for the next one would be too agonizing. Do you have anything planned for this fall?

From derhammer on Tue, May 17, 2011 at 12:38:31 from 192.156.110.39

OK - so we are hijacking IJR's blog, but hey, he is a nice guy and won't mind, I am sure!

OK - so full disclosure time. I am planning on running Marathon to Marathon on June 11th in northern Iowa. That's why I have been training hard. The next on the schedule is California Internation Marathon on December 4th. That would be too close to Houston for sure, though.
