This evening I added 32 miles biking @ 18 mph avg. speed. Rode with a friend from work. Could have gone faster but my friend was struggling on the way back. We did stop a few time (I normally try not to stop). Now I've got to decide what to do tomorrow...Humm?____________________________________________________________________

2 mile run again this morning. The weather was just right for me, 69 degrees and 68% humidity...! I have run this same 2 mile run five times since my hip quit hurting. Each one has been about the same 7:00 pace. This is my 10K pace but it doesn't feel like I could go for 6 miles at this pace right now. Hopefuly, as I up the milage, I will feel more comfortable at this speed. I really need to get these two mile runs down to 6:15 so I can prepare myself for my sub-20 5K. So far I haven't really been trying to run them any faster than a moderate effort. I also plan to ride 30+ on the bike this evening.

8Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, sneaking around to find someone to attack. 9But you must resist the devil and stay strong in your faith. You know that all over the world the Lord's followers are suffering just as you are.

I'm really impressed by this biking development. You are onto something.

I'm still curious how all the biking will equate to long and faster running. For example, while biking you can always relax for a minute and catch your breath and let your HR drop. Running won't allow this. I have caught myself, on my latest 5 mile runs, thinking..."If I could only coast for a minute"...? Anyway, I'm not the first to do this, I'll just have to see how it all plays out. Also, it seems I've lost all my perspective on speed and endurance in my running. I think it's just going to take more running miles to get it back.

You have made me feel a bit better about not being able to run. I am headed down to my bike and actually happy about it now! ha! I can't believe how fast you still are! yippee!

You are not messing around on your running paces! Have a good ride this evening.

From JG on Fri, Sep 23, 2011 at 20:49:25 from 71.59.27.33

Mice speed ... it is hard to jump right into fast miles, I bet if you did a 5 mile progression run with the last 2 sub 7:00, they would feel alot easier. Try 8:30, 8:00, 7:30, 7:00, 6:45 ... maybe?

From I Just Run on Fri, Sep 23, 2011 at 22:24:02 from 71.41.149.142

Hey JG...

I know I'm slow but you don't have to call my running "Mice Speed" :-) I am a little faster than a mouse! Even though you're making fun of my running I still think I'll take your advice on the progression run. I'm thinking about running my small loop which is 6.75 miles. I could do the progression on the first five and take the last 1.75 easy.

Joe,

The ride was good tonight. I added it to the report above.

Steam,

All I can say is pedal like crazy...!

Hey, I love to cycle! What do you ride? We are close to the same speed running wise. Cycling at around 21 and up seems to be just about right with me with a good run. Not quite a tempo run and faster than a recovery run. Any thoughts? I have found that for me you have to run to get faster, but cycling sure does help the cardio. I ride a Specialized Roubaix. Sweet ride! Good luck.

Hi Rye,

I just started biking about a month ago and have been running about a year and a half so I'm a little bit of a novice at both. I was running about 60 to 70 miles but aquired a hip problem, layed off for a month then substituted my running for 200+ biking miles a week. I'm not up to 21 mph on my biking on my 20-30-40 mile rides yet. Also not sure how the nominee translates to running. My goal is to get back to 59+ running and 100+ biking miles soon. My bike is an off brand (Condor) but its all carbon (17 lbs) and has all Shamano 101 gear (my biker friends all say its a pretty good bike). On a side note, I'm on a mission to get to 20 mph on a 30 mile ride...Kinda a side bet with JG for a case of beer even though I don't drink :-)

From Rye on Sat, Sep 24, 2011 at 02:56:37 from 174.27.78.215

Sounds like a sweet ride. My figures are based on heart rate stress comparison. Say if I'm running 8 minute miles and my heart rate is 150, then my cycling speed at that heart rate is 20 or 21 mph. Cycling is a blast! It sounds like you are doing great. It's even better when your with a group. 17lbs is light and it probably responds great to you. We have a ton of hills where I live, so it's fun to challenge yourself and see how your speed increases as the cycling season progresses. Good change of pace in the heat I would imagine! Cycling is easier in the heat compared to running.

My problem with the HR comparrison is that BPM can drop 20 when I cost or go down hill. My legs have been continually sore (quads and hamstrings but no joint pains) since I started biking. It is getting better but obviously my legs are built up for biking yet :-) I don't have a group to ride with but have gone a few times to Gruene where there is a group ride. The group is all very experienced and fast. They ride about 35 miles at 25-27 mph. I can only hang on for about 6-7 miles :-(

From Rye on Sat, Sep 24, 2011 at 11:32:20 from 174.27.78.215

Drafting in those group rides are crazy! The speeds are equally insane. Sounds like you are making progress. Good luck healing up. So there is a hill in Texas! Where bouts is it located?

From I Just Run on Sat, Sep 24, 2011 at 12:10:09 from 166.205.14.243

Ha ha... Yeah nothing like your mountains. I live in the "hill country". Most of them are no more than 100' elevation but they go on an on. Got up to 40 mph yesterday...that was fun!

Hey Rye, what's your BQ qualifying time? Do you have any plans to run for a qualified soon?

From Rye on Sat, Sep 24, 2011 at 13:15:15 from 174.27.78.215

I went on a cycling trip last year in Yellowstone Park and went we over the Continental Divide and got some awesome speed. You dont want to have a misshap at those speeds. My qualifying time is 3:30. I need a good year of injury free running I think that it is in the cards. I had a bout with posterior tibia tendonitis in May and that set me back 3 whole months. I'm just trying to get my base built back up. What's your bq time?

From I Just Run on Sat, Sep 24, 2011 at 14:07:21 from 71.41.149.142

It was 3:35 but I guess this year it's 3:30...so we must be close to the same age (51?)

From Rye on Sat, Sep 24, 2011 at 14:19:36 from 174.27.78.215

Oh, I forgot about the change...... I'm 48 so it's 3:25.

From I Just Run on Sat, Sep 24, 2011 at 19:33:57 from 71.41.149.142

Ok...so my plan is to run a 3:25 in my next marathon...Let's both qualify this year!!
