Okay everybody....Sorry for being stealth for so many days but between my hip problem (and having nothing to say) and work (which has been crazy) I really have fallen down on keeping up on the Blog.

First: My hip is still painful. The symptoms are the same (but not as bad). When I get up in the morning and take the first few steps it hurts quite a bit. Throughout the day it feels better but as I walk, run, etc. it still hurts to put pressure on it. Actually the pain seems to come and go in intensity. More activity doesn't seem to make it hurt immediatly but later it may start hurting more. For example the last few days I have been working outside doing manual labor at the Extreme Home Makeover in Kansas, this didn't seem to have aggrivated the hip any more than normal.

Today I decided to go ahead and run a couple of miles. The first 1/2 mile the hip hurt quit a bit but after that got much better. Now (3 horus later) it actually feel pretty good..just a little discomfort. I''ll wait and see how it feels later today and in morning before deciding if I'm going to run again tomorrow. On a side note, I can't believe how much conditioning I have lost in two weeks. My heart rate was way up compared to a normal run of this type so I  guess I'll be starting over again when I do get to training again :-(

I got my bike in and plan to go to the bike store today to get shoes, helmet, pants, etc. I was able to ride the bike a few minutes yesterday and it didn't seem to bother my hip at all. Hopefully the bike will allow me to do something until my hip is back to 100%.

Here's the run for today:

47 I’ll show what it’s like when someone comes to me, hears my words, and puts them into practice. 48 It’s like a person building a house by digging deep and laying the foundation on bedrock. When the flood came, the rising water smashed against that house, but the water couldn’t shake the house because it was well built. 49 But those who don’t put into practice what they hear are like a person who built a house without a foundation. The floodwater smashed against it and it collapsed instantly. It was completely destroyed.”

The first few runs are always the worst after a layoff. If you do start running more again, just don't jump into the faster speeds or big mileages yet! Hope the bike pays off as well, one of these days I'll get one...

Welcome back. Good to hear the bike didn't hurt your hip. I've been able too ride as hard as I wanted with most running injuries that I've had [including a hip flexor problem and hip bursitis]. In fact I think it helps make the injuries feel better just to get the blood flowing and loosen things up. You'd be surprised how much running fitness you can keep just by riding for a month. In 2008 I couldn't run all of Aug. In September I ran 16,27,44,and 48 mile weeks and still ran 3:14 at St George[into a huge headwind with driving rain the whole way so was probably worth 5 to 10 min faster]. I had ridden my bike 80 to 160 miles per week during that time. If no for the bike miles I'd have been lucky to run 3:25 to 3:30 in those conditions. Hope it works out for you.

What part of your hip hurts? Front, side, back?

From I Just Run on Mon, Aug 08, 2011 at 16:22:30 from 67.79.11.242

Thanks Joe,

My plan was to try 2 easy miles each day this week and see if it gets worse, better or stays the same.

Dave,

What you're telling me is actually good news to my ears. I'm thinking it bursitis but don't know exactly. Like I said, it didn't seem to hurt it at all to ride the bike...but it was only a mile or so. I actally feel and probably sound like an idiot when trying to describe where it hurts. I know it hurts when I step on that leg inside the joint. sometimes it seems to also hurt when I raise my leg forward but not much to the back or the side. It also hurts more after I lay down such as in bed and then get up and try to walk. I think my back became aggrivated because of me compensating for the leg pain. I don't really want to go to the doctor because I know what she will say...either lay off of it longer and/or take some medication to mask the pain. I don't like either option as I have layed off of it for over two weeks so far and I also know that I can take ibuprofen and almost eliminate the pain. But after the ibuprofen wears off it hurts more (probably because I over do it).

How long did your hip flexor and bursitis last. It seems I may have the same problem.

Also...as a side note, I feel like a traitor to our running group ...these bikes here at work are driving me crazy...!!!!

Tom on the blog had a problem that seemed similar to yours earlier this year that started as more back than hip then became more hip after a couple of weeks You might ask him about it or read his enties. I think it was around January. He went to a doc and it was diagnosed as hip flexor. My hip flexor problem hit 2 1/2 weeks before running St George in 2009. Mine would actually get real bad about 2 miles into a run. I went to an Orthopedic surgeon and he diagnosed it and told me to load up on ipbuprfen for a week then run the marathon if I wanted.Said I wouldn't do any permanent damage. It got real bad about 5 miles into the marathon and I was going to drop out at the next aid station but couldn't bring myself to quit and finished the race. 1 1/2 weeks after the race I was able to start some low mileage and was running decent after 4 weeks. The hip flexor is on the front of your hip and aids in bringing your leg forward. At times it almost felt close to groin area but not quite and does hurt with forward motion of the leg.

My bursitis feels deeper in the joint and the worst bout I had with it kept me out about 3 weeks almost no running then gradual buildup. I have lots of reoccurring flareups but I usually am able to control it with Ibu and slowing down my runs for the week. Sometimes a day or two off. Running every other day after coming back from a bad injury like yours has made a huge difference for me.

Dave,

That all makes sence and seems to be in line with my problem. This whole problem came on me within a couple of day so I'm not sure how I could have avoided it. Maybe I should only run a couple of miles every other day for a week?

Sorry to hear the hip is still an issue ... wish I had some advice for you, but I have never had hip issues so it is a foreign topic to me! I will pray for a speedy recovery ... and encourage you to break that bike in, as it will do wonders for maintaining fitness & aid in the recovery!

From Dan on Mon, Aug 08, 2011 at 23:23:22 from 24.209.83.20

Hey welcome back- those first runs are tough, I hope you continue to heal up and the bike will help with your fitness as well!

From Steam8 on Tue, Aug 09, 2011 at 03:16:17 from 166.70.55.77

You are still in great shape and it won't take you long to be back on top! I just hope you don't end up biking now and quit blogging your runs! Hoping things still feel good after the run today!
