Ok....I'm on my last week before the Cowtown Marathon on Sunday February 29th. Today was my Taper Long Run - 10 Miles @ 7:26 Pace. I originally planned to go to Austin and run the Livestrong Half marathon as my training run (at 7:26 pace) but opted out and spent time with the family instead.

Now I need to decide what I'm going to run at Cowtown. I have been training for a 3:15 marathon based on the Run Less Run Fast program. Supposedly, with the 18 week training program I just completed, a 3:15 marathon is achievable. My first marathon time was 3:38 (last year) but I had some major injury problems and I basically didn't run for a full month before the marathon. My Boston Qualifying time is now a 3:30 with the new time requirements. I have also signed up to run the Oklahoma City marathon again which is 8 weeks after the Cowtown. I was thinking I should run Cowtown at about 3:25, knock out my QB and then be free to go all out at OKC shooting for the 3:16. I'd sure like some advice regarding this decision :-)

Here's my long run results:

Ephesians 6:10-12

10-12And that about wraps it up. God is strong, and he wants you strong. So take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials. And put them to use so you will be able to stand up to everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that we'll walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his angels.

Great final MP run. I think you are ready for a great race.

Not sure what you should do at Cowtown. In Houston, I had a similar dilemma and ended up holding back a bit to ensure I just got the BQ, and it was probably the right decision. You can always start out and do the first half, maybe even the first 20 miles in the 7:40s or so, then play it by ear.

On the other hand, I think you're in way, way better shape than 3:30, so you could potentially go for a 3:15 or better and still hit your BQ even if you bonked. That won't be as enjoyable though, as running conservatively and feeling good the whole time would be.

Looks like you are ready for the marathon! Is this one a Boston Qualifier? Just pick any marathon and you will BQ--You are in such great shape right now. I'm excited to see how you do!

I agree with Joe. That is a solid run you had and your training is paying off.

I would take the first 2 miles somewhat conservative and then see how you feel. If you can settle in at a nice mid 7 pace that feels like a trot for the first 15 or so, you will be golden. Personally I love finishing strong, but that just me.

Its your race my friend, enjoy it.

Like they say, the race begins at mile 20. It is so tough to say, because those first miles can seem so easy, but push too hard and it can all come apart so quickly at the end. Maybe think of the marathon in 2 parts? So be at the half way mark @ 1:40 (a 3:20 marathon) (or whatever your conservative goal is) and slowly pick up the pace, and if at 20 you are feeling good go for it. You will have to analyze the course and play with some numbers.

I say stick with the plan and go for the 3:15, just don't get carried away in the first few miles. Watch your pace closely even if it seems too easy(it will). You have been training for the 3:15 and exceeding most of the benchmarks along the way. You have no reason to doubt yourself now. You are going to own this race and earn a spot in Boston!

From I Just Run on Wed, Feb 22, 2012 at 10:56:11 from 67.79.11.242

Joe, thanks for the advice. I'm really not sure what "enjoying" a race would be like. I feel like every time I race I decide to push my limit. I've just got to decide at what point in this race I do that.

Steam, yes it is...I'm also entered in OKC 8 weeks after this race...I call it insurance.

Dan, thanks good advice!

DR, I would say my concertive race would be 3:25 .. ha, ha but that's a long way from my 3:38 first marathon :-)

RT, you hit the nail right on the head about doubt...that's my biggest hurtle to overcome. I have supprised myself in almost every race I've run but I don't want to get over confident.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Wed, Feb 22, 2012 at 11:02:07 from 24.18.125.122

Basing your effort on past performance is not being over confident. You have every reason to believe you are going to succeed! Any time after 20 miles is ok to push your limits :)

From SlowJoe on Wed, Feb 22, 2012 at 11:05:26 from 74.195.74.62

I agree -- stop enjoying the race after 20 miles and then make yourself miserable. But enjoy that first 20.
