No running today since I'm officially in taper mode now. I went back and compared a few of my best 20+ mile runs to try and figure out what condition I'm in. I have actually run 20 miles or further 12 times in my life which includes the two marathons. Below is five of those runs.

                         Avg.
21 Mile Runs Pace HR HR % Temp
Best 21 in 2011 7:45 154 84 65Âș
First 21 at OKC 2011 8:00 165 91 45Âș
Last 21 Before Ft Worth 2012 7:49 153 81 55Âș
First 21 at Ft Worth 2012 7:39 162 87 45Âș
Last 21 Before OKC 2012 7:55 150 79 60Âș

Any comments or analogies are welcome :-)

according to the data...I'm confused! :) Not that I'm any sort of expert by any means! I'd assume the lower temps and slower or same pace would produce a lower HR - but it seems to be just the opposite. So, I'm really confused by the data. Wouldn't a cooler day and tapering and a slower/same pace yield a lower HR? Strange. Maybe race anxiety does that to us? Sorry...probably making more questions that giving answers. I'm interested to see how OKC turns out for you! Lets hope that this is a turn around race. Enjoy the taper.

RAD,

Ha ha... I noticed the same thing. It may have something to do with the Reynolds disease I have. When the temp is below 60 I don't get good blood flow to my hands and feet so keeping warm is really hard. When I bundle up I just get sweaty/wet and cold. My hands and feet turn white and get really stiff.

...So I think I'm hoping for 60 - 65 degree weather in OKC.

3 20 milers this year plus a marathon ... great job! I have run 20+ miles 13 times ... 11 marathons & 2 50k's! lol Hope you get great weather in OKC, temps have a huge effect on pace, no matter how you trained! :)

Could be the stress of running in a race that elevated your heart rate. Running at a time of day you're not used to running, as usually happens in races, could also be the culprit. Looks like you are right where you need to be to run 3:30, though.

From Dave S on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 11:52:40 from 69.170.115.216

I've read that you can usually expect a little higher heart rate in a race from the extra excitement. I've notice it some myself but mainly in the first mile.

I'd say that if you can run the first 21 miles of your marathon at 7:50 to 7:55 pace and have an average HR in the low 150s [like that last long run] you will be in great position to hit your goal.

From SlowJoe on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 19:22:40 from 69.131.141.92

Looks to me like you're in pretty good shape by comparison, with your lowest HR and warmer temps. Glad you are running OKC, we'll have to meet up there.

With good weather I think you are in great shape to hit your goals! One piece of advice if you don't mind... Start off slow :)

Taper mode must mean that you have decided to do your marathon?! :) Very excited for you!!
