I tried a new method of running my long run today as described in McMillan Running. What is described is two different long runs, a "Steady State" Long Run and a "Fast Finish" Long Run. I'm sure most runners are familiar with the Steady State Run and that's what I did today. The other run is a little different which I am going to try next week. Here's a link to the article:

I approached this run a little differently than I have ever have before. I decided, because this article was talking about "steady state", to focus on effort and not pace. In other words, run by heart rate effort and not pace effort. With the hills I run my heart rate effort goes way up and down based on the grade of each hill. As you can see from my results my paces varied from 7:58 to 9:01 (with the exact HR). To me that seems like a big difference. I did intend, and manage to, push my HR up each lap by a little but making sure I stayed below 145 (oops, I just had to push a little at the end :-).

Now I wish I had more time to try these type of Long Runs. I would like to see what the outcome would be if I ran at a 145 HR throughout the run. Would my pace slow, could I maintain? This was by no means a "taxing" run. When I finished I was tired of being on my feet and I felt a little stiff but after my .25 mile cool-down I was walking away just fine.

Nice run! I've read that article but forgotten about it. Will be interested to hear how the Fast Finish long run goes, although as JG says next week may not be the best timing for that. Save it for the BQ effort.

Yes I slowed down a lot on the hills. I wonder if they should have that much effect on me. This has been one of my highest milage weeks ever and I'm feeling good. Recovery after each run (even the long ones) has been very quick.

I know it may sound too long but I'm planning an 18 miler on Friday. After that the last week will be very easy.

I'm going to go ahead and try it next week. It seems I've felt "stale" going into every marathon while going into my half marathons, in the middle of my marathon training, I've felt great and run my best.

I've decided on Temple. The weather forcast today shows a low of 48 degrees that morning. That's the lowest forcasted temperture for the next three weeks. I'm sure I won't be that lucky...but I'm still hoping :-)

Although my long runs may not have been impressive in many's eyes, I've felt really good about them and the extra few miles (21 instead of a normal 18 miles) makes me feel much more confident.

I understand minimizing your taper, but 18 miles 9 days before a marathon is stupid, ask any rumning coach on the planet!

You're right JG. I should have run that 18 miler last week. I think I'll only do 12. I'm thinking I need to cut my milaage to about 35-40 this week and maybe only 20 next week.
