I decided to do something different today so I went to the Gym with the intention to run a few fast miles. My legs were a little tired from yesterday so I only ran two fast miles out of 6 on the treadmill. I set it at 1% to simulate a road run. I had originally hoped to run 3 fast miles. As usual my knee hurt worse on the slow miles.

I realized that I now need some new shoes. I blew part of the sole off of my Mizuno Wave Riders. The roads I run on around my house are "chipped rock" so it is very rough and I'm sure hard on the soles. I probably don't help the wear on my shoes running like a three legged wildebeest.

1 Samuel 7:11-13

11 The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.  12 Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.” 13 So the Philistines were subdued and they stopped invading Israel’s territory. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines.

Wow ... you jumped right in to that 10mph head first on the treadmill! I can never increase the speed that fast on the TM, usually bump it up a couple tenths every tenth of a mile. Two speedy miles though, good work!

Nice run! If you can run two 6 min. miles during a 6 mile run like that, you should have no trouble breaking 20 min. in a 5k by quite a bit. Nice run yesterday too. That knee doesn't seem to be slowing you down too much.

6:00 is lung-burning-pain territory for me, nice job.

Yeah, i just ramp it up about .02 before the fast mile. The first quarter is easy, the next is somewhat hard and the last quarter really hurts. Like Dave says if I could do two concecutive at this pace I should be able to break the 20:00 5K mark. I know i still need some work to do that.

I've never tried this, but I have a friend who increased maintaining his goal 5k pace distance by 0.2 miles every week, starting at 1 mile ... in 5 weeks he was running 2 miles at his goal pace, I think it took him 7 weeks to get up to 3 miles. When he finally did the 5k he beat his goal by 17 seconds. Interesting theory!

I wasn't saying you needed to do 2 consecutive at 6:00. I think you could easily break 20 now after seeing the workout you just did.

Hey Dave,

A couple of months ago I was able to do two consecutive 6:00 miles followed by one 10:00 mile and then two more consecutive 6:00 miles on the treadmill with a 1% incline. I'm not back to that point yet but maybe soon...? I'd like to do a little "speedier" work on the treadmill but at my gym 6:00 is the fastest. I did see a post that they have orderd new treadmills, maybe the new ones will go faster! They only have three :)

From Dave S on Wed, May 18, 2011 at 18:33:10 from 4.254.221.229

That's some great speed. You need to get out and run a 5k and get that pr where it should be.
