I was hoping it would be a little easier than it seemed. My legs were somwhat dead feeling before the run but actually felt better after. I'm worriedI may not be able to drop the pace another 20 seconds per mile for the race on Saturday :-(

There's no possible way to improve your fitness between now and the 5K. The only way to prepare physically for the best race possible is to rest and practice some muscle memory by running at pace. That's why I think taking tomorrow off and doing a very light workout on Friday, like I described before, is your best bet.

In the 5K I find that negative splits are very possible. Most of my PRs have come in negative split races. It is a huge psychological boost to see your times getting faster, even if only a couple seconds, in the last mile. Also, passing other runners is way better than being passed. I think you should be able to go out a little slower than 6:26 pace, maybe up to 6:30, and still get your time. This is assuming the last mile isn't all up hill.

Don't be surprised if you are able to run a lot faster in a race situation, with the adrenaline flowing, than you can in a tempo run by yourself.

Thanks for the advice DL,

I plan to follow it and see how things work out. It's not like I've been training for this 5K, it's just happening and I thought I would take advantage of it. Even the Half marathon next week and the bike race the following are things that are happening close to where I live and are not really factors in my overall plan. I will start training in November for the Cowtown Marathon which is part of my ultamate BQ goal.

I'm not sure how hilly the 5K course will be. I'll probably ride it before the race to formulate my game plan. A negative split would be good although I have never done that in any of my (5) 5K's.
